A catherine wheel is a firework which when ignited, spins quickly, producing a display of sparks and coloured flame.

Following the prolonged baiting of the wolf, it is significant that the firework is named after the instrument of torture, the breaking wheel, on which St. Catherine of Alexandria was martyred.
