James Graham was a Scottish soldier and poet who fought for Charles I in Scotland. He was born in 1612 and in 1626 he inherited the earldom of Montrose from his father. The lines “He either fears his fate too much, Or his deserts are small, That puts it not unto the touch, To win or lose it all” which are quoted in The Far Pavilions
are from his poem 'My Dear and Only Love'. He was hanged in 1850, aged 37.
