The term pince-nez comes from the French words pincer, meaning 'to pinch' and nez, meaning 'nose'.  Pince-nez spectacles do not have earpieces and are kept in place with a solid bridge piece which pinches the nose.  They were popular with both men and women during the 19th century but are much less common today.
