Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, is a month of fasting during which Muslims avoid eating and drinking between the hours of dawn and sunset.  In the evening the fast can be broken with a meal known as Iftar.

As well as fasting, Muslims are also encouraged to spend more time on prayer and worship.
