The magpie, or pica pica, is a bird belonging to the crow family.  With its distinctive black and white plumage, it is one of the easiest birds to identify.

There are many superstitions regarding magpies - for example, some people salute them when they see them to ward off bad luck.

There are several rhymes and poems about magpies, including the following:

"One for sorrow, two for joy; Three for a girl, four for a boy; Five for silver, six for gold; Seven for a secret, never to be told."

Magpies are also known for their love of shiny objects.
