Art had to some extent become commercialised by the Great Exhibition (1851), which took place in the Crystal Palace, a vast glass pavilion in Hyde Park. Its purpose was to show off the products of the Empire, especially manufactured goods such as house fittings, soft furnishings and ceramics.

Through the Aesthetic Movement and the Arts and Crafts Movement, creative art became a clear symbol of wealth.
