A cablegram is a telegraph message (Morse code sent by electrical pulse) that has been carried by undersea cable.
These undersea cables were laid throughout the British Empire from the 1850s onwards, usually conveying messages between businesses or governments.
Jolly's sisters, June and Holly, volunteer to become Red Cross nurses. The International Red Cross was formed in 1861 to help wounded soldiers on or off the battlefield. It quickly developed national organisational systems for delivering aid in disasters. The first thirteen national members, all European, held the first International Conference of National Aid Societies for the Nursing of the War Wounded in 1867. The International Committee of the Red Cross is based in Geneva.
