"Charles's had been a baronet"

A Baronet is the holder of an honour above a knighthood but ranking below members of the peerage (Dukes, Marquesses, Earls, Viscounts, Barons). 

The marriage of rich young women of the middle class to less wealthy but titled men of the upper classes was a common occurance in Victorian England, although it was often considered that the groom was marrying beneath himself.
