Booterstown is a salubrious suburb of South County Dublin. In general Booterstown is populated by professional people who are well paid.
This is the area where Ada and Charlie lived and reared their family and where a large part of 'The Gathering' is set. It is within fifteen minutes walk of the centre of Dublin city. It would have been populated originally by families whose men worked in Guinnesses or on the railways or buses and whose women would have worked as shop assistants in the city or in the myriad small clothing factories in the area as seamstresses.
Veronica's father hailed from Mayo. Mayo is a sparsely populated county on the west coast of Ireland. It would have been one of the counties hardest hit by the Irish Famine in the mid 1800s. The land is poor and there are no indigenous industries apart from turf cutting. it is hoped that Mayo and all the other counties on the west coast of Ireland might find new prosperity by harnessing the wind and the Atlantic waves to provide electricity both for Ireland and by inter-connector to Europe.
Veronica is educated and well-heeled. She shops in the nicer, leafier, more expensive end of the city, around St Stephen's Green south of the river
Liffey and the places she mentions such as the Shelbourne Hotel would be regarded as being the stomping ground of those with 'a few bob' (money)
Brighton is a popular seaside town on the south coast of England, an hour's journey from London. It is popular both with day-trippers and holiday makers.
