El Greco (1541-1614) was a Spanish Renaissance artist, sculptor and architect. It is perhaps fitting that Nick's visions come in dreams as El Greco's work was characterised by oddly twisted and elongated figures and fantastical meldings of colour. His individual and fitful style resists conventional artistic definition.
The poignant final line of the novel served as the Fitzgeralds' epitaph. They are buried in St Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Rockville, Maryland.
