"Innes was posted shortly afterwards to an airfield in Norfolk"

The airfields that operated in World War Two serve as unsettling reminders of the dreadfulness of war. There were several airfields in Norfolk, but pictured here is West Raynham.

At another airfield in Essex, there stands a strange and beautiful object; and old light beacon, that used to be sited at Hatfield airfield in the war.

There is something very atmospheric about these ghostly images and places. They inspired a wonderful poem by Seamus Heaney called The Aerodrome.
