The Shah Faisal Mosque in Islamabad was constructed between 1976 and 1986, and was paid for by the Saudi Arabian government.

On completion, it was the largest in the world, but by the time Amir and Sohrab reached Islamabad five other mosques around the globe had surpassed it.  Shah Faisal can accommodate 100,000 worshippers.

Designed by Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay, the mosque is modelled on a Bedouin tent.  It lacks the dome of more traditional mosques.  The minarets are 80 metres high.
