A manoir is the French term for a manor house, a medieval country house that was the seat of the local gentry. Although they were often fortified by moats, walls or other defences, they were not military buildings in the sense of a castle (ch√Ęteau) but residential buildings designed to impress.

Many manoirs in Normandy are now operated as holiday lets or hotels.
