 Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1941) was a Russian-born composer, pianist and conductor. He left Russia in 1917 during the Russian Revolution and eventually set up home in America.

Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C-sharp minor for piano is one of his most famous compositions. It is part of a set known as Morceaux de fantaisie, and was first performed in Moscow in 1892 by the composer himself. Later on, Rachmaninoff published a further 23 preludes.
