The Queen of the Underworld in Greek mythology, Persephone appeared in tales which explained the natural world and the seasons.

Daughter of Demeter, goddess of the Earth, she was said to have been abducted by Hades and taken to the Underworld, but allowed to return home for half the year, ushering in the Spring and new growth.
