"around Bethnal Green"
Bethnal Green, part of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, is an area of East London. Originally an agricultural hamlet, it became part of the city in 1855. Developed in the 18th century to house silk workers and characterised by market gardens, by the 19th century it had become one of the largest slums in London, full of dilapidated cottages housing several families. The area has been undergoing recent gentrification and has a population of around 25,000 people, 41% of whom are of Bangladeshi descent.
