Egypt is situated mainly in North Africa, with part of it covering the Sinai Peninsula.  It has long been famous for its rich ancient culture, exemplified by the pyramids at Giza, the Valley of the Kings and the Great Sphinx.  Most of its land mass is desert, so most of the population live close to the Nile Valley and Delta.  Two major battles took place between Allied and German forces in the northern town of El Alamein in 1942, and a Commonwealth graveyard was established there to commemorate the dead.  It is an Arab and predominantly Muslim country.  Its cultural life is still strong; it has the highest number of Nobel Laureates in Africa.  Some of its famous towns and cities include Cairo, Luxor, Sharm-el-Sheikh and Alexandria
