The Karakoram Highway is the highest paved road in the world (although it is not in fact paved for its full length). It connects China and Pakistan through the Karakoram Mountains, and reaches an altitude of 4,693m (15,397ft) in the Khunjerab Pass. Completed in 1986, it is 1,300km (800 miles) long and is sometimes referred to as the ‘Ninth Wonder of the World’ due to the construction problems it has overcome.
