"I drove in near-darkness between high hedges"
The high hedgerows of Devon
have been protected under the Hedgerow Regulations since 1997: they often date back centuries, even to the Bronze Age, and are established habitats for wildlife. Unprotected hedgerows can be reviewed using a hedgerow notice to establish their historical and environmental value. Devon lanes are narrow and the hedges can be well over six feet high on either side, sometimes making it difficult for two cars to pass one another.
