"and sleek little Astrakhan coat"
Astrakhan is a type of loose curled fur made from the coats of young Karakul lambs, once bred near the city of Astrakhan in south-western Russia. Karakul sheep, which usually have black or grey coats, originated in Central Asia, near Bukhara in modern Uzbekistan. Hats made from Karakul pelts were often seen gracing the heads of the Soviet leaders, like Brezhnev; the hats are popular with men in Central Asia, including the current President of Afghanistan, Hamid Khazai.
