Fred Astaire, born Frederick Austerlitz (1899-1987), was a dancer, singer and actor. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska, and later the family moved to New York City. Both Fred and his sister Adele began using the stage name 'Astaire' for the various dance routines they performed together.
In 1916 Astaire met the American composer George Gershwin, a meeting that led to their successful careers on Broadway. Astaire's sister Adele married in 1932, and he then partnered numerous other dancers. His career spanned 76 years, during which he made 31 musicals, 10 of them with Ginger Rogers, an american actress, dancer and singer. Rogers was to be the most popular of all Fred's dance partners. They worked together for RKO between 1933 and 1939.
