Charles de Gaulle [1890-1970] was a French general and statesman who led the Free French Forces during the Second World War.

The Free French Forces continued to fight Axis forces after the surrender of France and subsequent German occupation.

In 1958, Charles de Gaulle founded the French fifth republic and, from 1959 to 1969, served as its first president.
