The Tyrol is a federal state or 'Bundesland' located in Western Austria, between Italy and southern Germany.

Historically the County of Tyrol formed part of the Holy Roman Empire. After the defeat of Austria in World War One, the Tyrol was divided. Northern and eastern Tyrol stayed with Austria and southern Tyrol became part of Italy. The region is mountainous; its highest peak is the Ortler at 3905 metres. It is popular with climbers and walkers who enjoy the Tyrolean countryside of crystal lakes and alpine meadows. The Tyrol is also famous for its many big ski resorts, its heritage railways and its capital city Innsbruck.
