The Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst opened in 1947. The Academy's aim is to be 'the national centre of excellence for leadership'. The British Army's officers are trained here, along with officers from many other parts of the world.
Thomas Gainsborough was a British portrait and landscape painter. He was born in Suffolk, but moved to London in 1740 to study art. He was one of the earliest members of the Royal Society of Arts and submitted works to the Royal Academy's annual exhibitions. His works attracted attention as his portrait subjects were usually well-known people. In 1780, he painted King George III and the queen, which led to his recieving many royal commissions.
