Wrens worked as cooks, clerks, electricans and telegraphists during the Second World War. Established in 1917, the Wrens were disbanded in 1919 after the end of the First World War, and then revived in 1939. By the end of WWII, the Service had 5,500 members. The Wrens were maintained after the war, until in 1993 they were integrated into the regular Royal Navy.

The Free French Forces continued to fight Axis forces after the surrender of France and subsequent German occupation.
In 1958, Charles de Gaulle founded the French fifth republic and, from 1959 to 1969, served as its first president.
