The Scottish Highlands include the rugged and mountainous regions of Scotland north and west of the Highland Boundary Fault. This geographical fault traverses Scotland from Arran on the west coast to Stonehaven in the east, and separates the two distinctly different regions, The Highlands and The Lowlands.

The Highlands are generally sparsely populated, with many dominant mountain ranges, which include Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles. The area is popular with climbers and walkers.

The scenery is spectacular, comprising mountains and lochs (lakes).

His landscapes were inspired by his native county of Suffolk. His paintings were more popular in France than England.

One of his most famous works was 'The Haywain' [1821], acknowledged today as one of the greatest of British paintings. The painting was originally entitled 'Landscape Noon', but later became known as 'The Haywain' for the harvest wagon it depicted.
