Mrs Lyle is referring to the Jewish Quarter in Cordoba which was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984 and is one of the largest in Europe. Having prospered under the tolerant rule of the Caliphate in Cordoba, the Jewish community thrived there until those that would not be forcibly converted to Catholicism were expelled from Spain by Ferdinand and Isabel in 1492.
