Although from a wealthy background, Victor Adler (1852-1918) founded the Socialist movement in Austria and created the marxist journals Gleicheit
- Equality in 1886 and the Arbeiter Zeitung
- The Workers Gazette in 1889. It was his wife Emma (1858-1935), coming as she did from a socialist background, that showed Victor the injustices of society that led him to embrace socialism.
