"Much of the parquet floor . . . was covered by . . . a Ushak carpet"
Ushak carpets are Turkish carpets that use a particular group of designs, usually a star or medallion pattern. Ushak is a city in Turkey about 100 miles south of Istanbul. It was a major center of rug production from the early days of the Ottoman Empire, where they were the preeminent formal rug of choice, well into the early 20th century. Antique Ushak carpets are among the most admired of Turkish rugs.
