"‘Well,’ I. O. Snopes says."

I. O. Snopes features in several Faulkner novels, most prominently The Hamlet (1940) and The Town (1957), as a thoroughly pernicious character. His career is marked by successive failures, bigamy and swindling, and he is ultimately ordered to leave Jefferson by his cousin Flem. He also appears in Flags in the Dust (1927; published 1973) and The Mansion (1959).
