NATO, The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, was formally established on 4 April 1949 as a defence against the military threat of the USSR. In the words of its first Defence Secretary, Lord Ismay, its purpose was 'to keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down.' In 1954 an overture from the Soviet Union regarding membership was turned down, resulting in the formation of the Warsaw Pact on 14th May 1955. The two alliances formed the two opposing sides during the Cold War.
The building is now the Cheyne Walk Brasserie.
