"Johann Sebastian Bach"

Public DomainBach
Bach (1685-1750) was a German composer, organist, and violinist who brought the musical styles and innovations of the Baroque period to their full potential. Though not an innovator himself, he became such a master of the forms pioneered by Corelli, Vivaldi, Telemann, and Handel that he eventually became the towering figure of that musical era.

Many of his works, from the Brandenburg Concertos and Goldberg Variations to the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, have become familiar through quotation in rock music and film.

This portrait, of Bach at 61, was painted by Elias Gottlob Haussman (1695-1774) in about 1742.
