Oslo is the capital of Norway. The city was founded in the 11th century, but was moved to a different site following its destruction by fire in 1624.
Norway means ‘northern way’ in Old Norse. It is a country rich in folk culture, and the folklore of the region is steeped in magical and mysterious beings such as trolls and witches. Roald Dahl’s parents were from Sarpsborg, Norway. The idea for The Witches stems from tales told to Dahl by his Norwegian grandparents
Much of The Witches takes place in Bournemouth, a seaside town in Dorset, England.
It is a popular holiday resort and retirement town, so a large party of old ladies visiting would blend right in.
