The Dead Sea is a salt lake bordering Jordan, Israel and the West Bank. Its surface and shores are 423 metres below sea level. It is both earth's lowest elevation on land, and the deepest salt lake in the world.
Its high salt content (at almost 34% salinity, it is 8.6 times saltier than the ocean) makes it uninhabitable for most fish and aquatic plants.
