" L'amour platonique "
describes a kind of non-sexual, strong love such as exists between close friends. The term refers to Plato, who discusses love in the Symposium,
where he posits that love is the root of truth and good, a means of contemplating the divine. In the fifteenth century the Florentine scholar Ficino coined the term amor platonicus
(Platonic love) to describe chaste love of this kind.
