"Smelly thinks it's Keystone Cops time."

In the story Hot Dogs (based, as all the stories, on a real-life incident) the chase through the school yard, with Smelly on a hot dog van being pursued by the headmaster, reminds the boy narrator of the silent film chases he has seen and particularly the Keystone Kops, created by Mack Sennett. Although these films were made between 1912 and 1917, they were still occasionally played on TV in the late 1950s.
