Chautauqua was a movement of travelling education tents. Like a modern-day circus, a Chautauqua assembly would stay several days in each place. Lectures, music and storytelling would be on offer. There were many different forms of Chautauqua during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries in the USA, including evangelical, secular and entertainment assemblies. The name Chautauqua comes from the place-name of the first assembly in New York State.
