Alfred Krupp (1812-1887) was the son of the successful steel manufacturer Friedrich Carl Krupp. After his father's death, Alfred took over the family business, building it into the largest company in Europe in the late nineteenth century.
Who rides so late through the night and wind?
The poem is Der Erlkönig by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It recounts the conversation between a frightened child and a father during a storm. The child seems to be able to see the Erl King (Erlkönig) that the father dismisses as imaginary. Suddenly the child is attacked by the Erlkönig and is killed.
