Clarissa, or, the History of a Young Lady (1748) by Samuel Richardson (1689-1761) is an epistolary novel, thought to be the longest novel in the English language.

The tragic heroine of the novel is Clarissa Harlowe, whose pursuit of a virtuous existence is constantly thwarted by her socially ambitious family.
