The restaurants include Creole, French, and Cajun food. Ruby and Pierre visit the St. Louis Cathedral to light a candle for Grandmere Catherine.

The most popular religion in the New Orleans area is Catholicism, influenced by the French and Spanish. French and Spanish culture influence the city in a variety of ways. Ruby takes a streetcar several times in the book, most likely the St. Charles line. The Dumas family lives in the Garden District, on St. Charles Avenue. When the neighborhood was built in the 19th century, the homeowners were quite wealthy.
