The Horse Whisperer brought the subject of Natural Horsemanship into the public domain, but the novel is about much more than that. It offers high-adrenalin adventure, particularly with the shocking and unflinching description of the terrible accident that drives the rest of the novel.  It is also an emotional love story, set under hugely romantic Western skies. At its heart, though, it is a tale of healing, learning and overcoming adversity.
