Place: This book takes place in villages in lower Nigeria. (Iguedo and Mbanta)

Nigeria was colonized by Great Britian in the 1880s and Nigeria did not regain its independence until October 1, 1960.

This book takes place in the 1890s before. It is important to note that during this time period the Europeans had begun their colonization of Africa. Throughout most of the book the setting take place pre- colinization.

The history of Nigeria before colonization dates back more than 2000 years.    Several minor kingdoms and empires rose and fell during this period of history. There was a strong slave and ivory trade in Nigeria even before European colonization. In the early 19th century, an Islamic empire was established by a rebel named Usman dan Fodio.

Towards the end of the novel, we see the clash between the white Christian colonizers and the native Africans in Things Fall Apart.

 Impacts of Colonization

When the Europeans invaded the natives land, they forced them to change their religion and become accustomed to European values and customs. The natives were forced off of their land to make room for European colonizers. The british rule allowed the new economy to be led by elite European business men.
