Step One:  Locate and Save Image

First, set up a "Book Drum" folder on your computer.  You'll be storing images downloaded from the Internet in this.

For our example, we'll search Flickr.com for a photograph of the Atlas statue outside the Rockefeller Center in New York - as mentioned by Dava Sobel in Longitude.

Go to the Flickr Advanced Search page: http://www.flickr.com/search/advanced/

Flickr Search

And tick the three Creative Commons boxes at the bottom of the screen:

Flickr CC

Click SEARCH to find all Flickr images with Creative Commons licences:

Flickr Choice

Click on your selected thumbnail to bring up the image page:

 Right Click

Note where the Copyright Owner and Licence information are located.

Right-click the image to see the Size options:

Size Menu

For most purposes, Medium 500 is big enough.  You might want to select a larger size only if you are planning to crop the picture.

Click on your chosen size.

Save As

Right-click image and choose "Save Picture As...".

Save the image to your Book Drum folder.

Keep Flickr open - you will need the licence and copyright owner information in the next step.

Step Two:  Upload Image to Book Drum

In a bookmark, a Setting place or Author biography, click the Upload Image button:

BD Upload button

Do this before you enter any text, as unsaved text will be lost on switching to the Image Upload function:

Upload Form

Click Browse to find the Atlas.jpg file in your Book Drum folder.

Choose the right licence from the menu options:

licence options

Remember, the licence is clearly stated at the bottom right of the Flickr screen:

Licence

This icon designates a Creative Commons Attribution licence.  See the top of this page for other licence icons. For any licence other than Public Domain, you MUST give the Copyright Owner's name.  On Flickr, it can easily be found near the top-right of the page:

Name

If no proper name is given, you should give the username like this: "beggs, Flickr"

Give the image a suitable title, then enter the Copyright Owner's name and cut & paste the URL (Web address) of the site hosting the image:

Flickr URL

Your completed form should look like this:

Upload Form Completed

Save the image:

bd save

Step Three:  Insert Image into Bookmark, Author page or Setting Place

Before inserting the image, enter your text and create any links.  Too much editing after the image is inserted may lead to formatting issues.

Place your cursor at the start of a paragraph and click the Image Insert button:

BD Pre-insert

Note: if the first word of the paragraph is a link, insert a space between your cursor and the link to avoid the link spreading to the Image credit (or vice versa).

Insert blank

Choose the size of image you want from the Image list menu:

size menu

Choose whether you want the image on the right or left of the paragraph from the Orientation menu:

orientation menu

Note: you can put a different image on each side of a paragraph.  Place your cursor at the beginning of the paragraph for both.

Click Insert:

Insert

Your image will appear in place:

Inserted image

Note: If you have a slow connection, allow time for the image to appear fully before clicking Save on the Bookmark.  Otherwise, the image will not insert properly.

When you save the Bookmark, the image credit will appear automatically, with a link back to the Flickr page:

Finished Image

If you want to edit the credit, you can do so by clicking "edit" on the Bookmark.  The credit text will now be editable.  You can also edit the main text, embed a video or upload more images.

Downloading an Image from Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons has a multitude of historical, military, celebrity and artistic images, as well as many maps.

Enter your search term at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

Select a thumbnail:

Right-click image and choose "Save Picture As..." to save to your Book Drum folder:

Scroll down the page to find the Copyright Owner and Licence information:

Note: Wikimedia Commons is less good at clearly stating the Copyright Owner's name.  Sometimes it is clear, sometimes it isn't.  You should do your best to locate the name, or at least the username, but if that isn't possible credit "Wikimedia Commons".

Paintings: Wikimedia has a wonderful selection of public domain images of paintings and engravings.  For these, you should put the name of the artist (e.g. Vincent Van Gogh) as the Copyright Owner, rather than the uploader of the image.  Only when a GNU or Creative Commons licence applies do you need to credit the uploader (in these cases, add the artist's name to the title of the picture).

Some copyright Flickr images can be embedded (rather than uploaded).  This means that the image is still hosted by Flickr but can be viewed on Book Drum.  To find out if a particular Flickr image can be embedded, click Share above the image.  If you see "Grab the HTML/BBCode", it can be embedded. Click this line, copy the code and paste it into your bookmark.  You cannot change the orientation of embedded images or wrap text around them.
