The most aggravating element of this novel is exactly what makes it so absorbing. Vampire Academy throws you right into the action; from the very beginning, strange terms are thrown about and characters you aren't familiar with experience momentous events. As the story progresses, it becomes clear that nothing is given away lightly; don't let this put you off, though! Richelle Mead is an exceptionally talented author who has created an original story so fascinating that it captivates your interest without having to delve into an explanation of anything until it is absolutely ready to reveal its secrets.
This young adult book provides teens with a believable leading lady whom many readers will be able to relate to. Rose Hathaway may be strong, brave and loyal, but this particular heroine certainly has her share of faults; through the course of the novel she learns plenty of lessons the hard way and gradually begins to fathom the meaning of responsibility. In addition, the difficult but extremely relevant issue of depression is dealt with in a way that is both understanding and pragmatic.
Although Vampire Academy is aimed at a younger audience, its imaginative, suspenseful and incredibly well-formulated plot will engage book lovers across all generations.
